Construction Site Camera Rental: What You Need From Excavation to Occupancy

A construction site doesn't need one security system. It needs a different one every few months. The empty lot with a fence around it, the excavation with equipment parked overnight, the structure going up floor by floor, the enclosed building full of copper and finishes: each one has different risks, different power, and different sightlines. That's why we rent cameras to builders rather than sell them. The equipment follows the project and leaves when it's done.

Here's what a typical site needs at each phase, and how the rental fits together.

Phase one: the fenced lot and excavation

Risks: equipment theft, fuel theft, trespassing, dumping.

At this stage there's no power, no internet, and no building to mount anything on. The answer is a portable surveillance unit: a solar-powered mast with cameras, lights, a speaker, and cellular connectivity, dropped at the gate or in the corner with the best view of the equipment compound. One or two units at this phase, positioned to see the gate and the laydown area, is usually enough. Add live monitoring and the operator can talk down anyone climbing the fence before they get near a machine.

Phase two: the structure goes up

Risks: tool theft, material theft, unauthorized access to upper floors, safety incidents after hours.

Once there's a structure, the site gets harder to watch. There are more places to hide, and the floors above grade are out of any ground camera's view. We keep the portable units on the perimeter and start adding cameras inside the structure as temporary power becomes available. On multi-storey projects this is also where guard patrols or robotic patrols start to matter, because a camera at the gate can't tell you what's happening on the eleventh floor.

Phase three: enclosed and finishing

Risks: copper, appliances, fixtures, and finished materials; this is the most expensive phase to lose.

The building now has walls, doors, and usually temporary power and internet. Cameras move indoors to cover stairwells, mechanical rooms, loading areas, and the rooms where finishes are stored. Verkada's cellular models still work if internet isn't reliable. Many builders add door sensors and alarms at this stage, and the same monitoring operators watch both.

Phase four: occupancy

The rental ends. If the owner wants a permanent system, we can convert to a purchased or leased Verkada install, often reusing the cable runs. If not, we remove the equipment and the invoices stop.

Why rental beats buying for a build

Buying cameras for a site that will disappear in eighteen months means owning equipment you'll have to store, re-deploy, and maintain. Renting means we do that. Cameras that fail are swapped. Licences are included. When the site is done, so is the contract. Rental starts from $100 per camera per month with a 6 month minimum, and portable units are priced per unit per month.

What makes a construction rental actually work

Cellular connectivity. There's no Wi-Fi on a job site, and if there were, we wouldn't use it. Every camera we rent connects over cellular, which is far harder to jam and needs nothing from the site.

Power that isn't the site's problem. Solar units run through the winter with a generator backup. Nobody on the crew should have to remember to charge a camera.

Live monitoring, not just recording. A recording of a theft is a small consolation. Our operators watch the site while it's armed, verify every alert on video, use the talk-down speaker, and dispatch police or a mobile patrol with a live description. Builders who've had one overnight loss tend to add monitoring the next day.

A crew that can move the equipment. Sites change weekly. Cameras that were perfect in March are blocked by a scaffold in April. Rental includes moves, because the alternative is a camera pointed at a wall.

One provider for the whole site. The same company renting the cameras runs the guards, the patrols, and the monitoring. There's one number to call and no argument about whose fault the gap was.
